Generalities

Spanish is one of the languages that has the highest number of speakers. It has an ample geographical distribution, since it is the official language of 21 countries, and about 380 million of people speak it. It is considered the fourth most spoken language worldwide and the second in order of importance. The growing expansion in the number of Spanish speakers has caused that the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language gathers strength in the international context.

Bearing in mind the role that Spanish plays in the current internationalization policies and the increase in the number of foreign people who come to Colombia because of business, tourism, and education, it is necessary to offer a program of Spanish for Foreigners, as part of the service portfolio that the Languages Department from Universidad Central offers to the community in general.


People interested in doing the regular 14-week course of Spanish for Foreigners must get a student visa (click here for more information).

Students will reach the B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), by the end of this program. They will be able to participate in different situations related to daily topics that are familiar to them and that reflect their interests and likes. Furthermore, they will be able to understand main and secondary ideas from different kinds of discourses in standard Spanish language and deal fluently with most of communicative situations in an effective way, making use of different tenses in order to support their points of view, as well as talking about experiences and events.

Students also will develop the skills required to use this language: Communicative competences, linguistic competences (lexical, grammatical, semantic, phonological and orthographic), sociolinguistic competences, pragmatic competences, and occupational competences.

Levels

Elementary – Breakthrough A1

By the end of the elementary cycle the students will have a level A1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This level will offer basic communicative elements which will allow the students to interact in an effective way in different simple daily situations.

Basic – Waystage A2

By the end of the basic cycle, the student will be in a level A2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The student will be able to communicate in simple social exchange situations to talk about practical affairs of the daily life, present or past events according to their personal experiences. Additionally, the student will employ adequate vocabulary and structures in relation to the topics established in the syllabus.

Intermediate – Threshold B1

At the end of the programme, students will be in a level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The student will be able to participate in a variety of situations related to everyday topics which are of familiar and personal interest. Also, s/he will be able to understand main and secondary ideas in different discourses in standard Spanish, and to perform effectively in most of communicative situations by using different verb tenses to justify points of view and to describe experiences and events.

Upper Intermediate – Vantage B2

By the end of this cycle, the student will get a B2 level. Students will be able to participate in communicative interactions that not only require a higher command of Spanish, but also a deeper understanding of the social context of the country in which they are learning the language. Students will comprehend and express opinions about texts in any literary genre as well as produce written texts. Thus, they will deal with the necessary fluency to express themselves, not only in immediate contexts but those ones that demand a higher level on comprehension and production in Spanish.
